NBA League Pass in HD

With the NBA season beginning tonight, lets take a look
at the NBA League Pass (LP) sports package, which includes
some HD games and is offered by local cable systems,
Directv and Dish Network. I have been an LP sub for the
last four years with Dish Network. LP provides up to 40
regular season NBA games a week in addition to the
national telecasts on TNT, ESPN, ABC and NBATV.
Subscribers are blacked out for the LP games of their
home team in the geographic area that they reside in.

If a sub is an out of market subscriber (Celtics fan living
in Los Angeles), the sub can more or less watch all 82
regular season Celtics games with a combination of games
on TNT, ESPN, ABC, NBATV, LP and the local Lakers and
Clippers games when the Celtics play the Lakers or Clippers.

Why would I subscribe to LP if I am not an out of market
subscriber? LP gives an NBA fan the opportunity to learn
about the players on all 30 teams, listen to the viewpoint
of different announcers, see the strengths and weaknesses
of each team, and pick your favorite matchup of the evening
to watch. LP also comes with NBATV. The NBA.com web site
lists about 68 HD games to be broadcast on NBATV this season.

If you do not think that you have the time to watch the additional
games on LP and NBATV, you can DVR two games on a dual tuner
DVR and watch the last period with fast forwarding in about 12 minutes.

How much does NBA LP cost? The early bird price is $159.
On November 7, the price increases to $179.

Are the games in HD? Both the Directv and Dish Network web sites
indicate that select games will be provided in HD. If Directv or
Dish Network provides the regional sports network (RSN) in HD,
the LP game will probably be in HD. Directv and Dish Network
do not provide every RSN in HD, but both satellite providers
are working to increase the number of HD RSNs provided.
Both Directv and Dish Network launched NBATV HD yesterday,
so the LP subs will get all of the NBATV games in HD.

Cable systems also have the option to provide LP games in HD
with InDemand's TeamHD channel. The November TeamHD
schedule is posted on InDemand's NBA LP section of its
web site (http://www.indemand.com/) and there are many HD
doubleheaders listed. TeamHD is optional to cable systems
and not every cable system will provide it. Subs should check
with their local cable system if TeamHD will be provided.
In 2006-07, cable systems provided NBATV HD games on the
MOJO channel or its predecessor INHD. The MOJO web site
does not list NBATV HD games for this season. Subs should
check with their local cable system to determine if NBATV HD
games are provided.

I am excited about watching the NBA in HD this season.

Dish Network Turns on NBA TV HD

Dish Network has now turned on NBA TV HD on
channels 9508 and 9509. It is available to NBA League
Pass or Multi Sport Package or America's Everything
Pack subscribers. As previously reported, Directv
made NBA TV HD available today as well. The NBA.com
web site lists about 68 live games available in HD on
NBA TV for the 2007-08 season, which begins
tomorrow night with an HD doubleheader on TNT,
beginning at 8:00 PM ET.

Verizon Fios Adds 202,000 TV Customers in 3rd Quarter

Verizon Communications announced today that it now
has 717,000 Fios TV customers, an increase of 202,000
from the second quarter. The increase in TV subscribers
for the 3rd quarter exceeded 39 percent from the 2nd
quarter, making Verizon the fastest growing US multi
video provider. Verizon provides 20 national HD channels.
Including HD national channels, HD local channels and HD
regional sports networks, Verizon provides up to 37 HD
channels to local markets. Verizon may add more HD
channels in 1st quarter 2008.

Verizon's adjusted net income for the quarter increased
14.5 percent to about $1.3 billion.

Yankee Star A-Rod Opts Out of Contract

It was reported live last night on the FOX HD World Series
broadcast that Yankee Star third baseman, Alex Rodriguez,
who is an overwhelming favorite to win his third MVP award
this season, will opt out of the remaining three years of his
contract, forfeiting $72 million of guaranteed salary, and become
a free agent. The Yankees will lose $21.3 million of
payments from the Rangers which were agreed upon
in the 2004 trade which brought A-Rod to the Yankees.
The Yankees are on record that they will not try to
resign A-Rod, if he opted out of his contract.

The failure to rehire Joe Torre may have more
consequences to the Yankees than was imagined.
If A-Rod, Posada, Rivera and Pettite do not come back,
the Yankees streak of 12 straight post season appearances
may be in jeopardy. It will be an interesting hot stove
season, as it always is in baseball.

So who would sign A-Rod for the kind of money he is
going to be looking for? Speculation has the usual
suspects: Angels, Cubs, Red Sox and Mets. The Cubbies,
who made the playoffs this year, and have not won
a World Series since 1908 might continue their spending
spree of last winter which included an eight year $136
million deal for Alfonso Soriano. Will the Red Sox choose
not to sign World Series MVP Mike Lowell and go after
A-Rod? Maybe? Will the Mets go after A-Rod and shuffle
either A-Rod, David Wright or Jose Reyes to second base?
Maybe? The Dodgers are a possibility, but would they
spend the money? The Phillies are on record that they
have to improve third base. How about that infield,
Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and A-Rod.
Would the Phillies spend the money? They have to sign
Howard to a long term contract, resign Aaron Rowand
and J.C. Romero. The Phillies have $17.8 million of
salary freed up with the expiration of Jon Lieber and
Freddy Garcia's contracts. Pat Burrell, Jamie Moyer
and Tom Gordon are in the final year of $14, $6.5,
and $7 million contracts. 2008 is the last year that the
Phillies have to pay the White Sox about $5.5 million
of Jim Thome's contract. So for 2009 and beyond,
the Phillies could budget a long term deal for A-Rod.
But would the Phillies spend that kind of money?
Probably not. The hot stove will keep burning.

NBATV HD Available on Directv

The Directv web site is reporting that NBA TV HD is available.
The NBA.com web site's schedule for NBA TV HD games lists
about 68 High Definition games this season. The first game is
scheduled for Sunday night, November 4, 8:00 PM ET,
Cavaliers at Suns. In addition to live HD games, NBA TV provides
classic games in SD and studio news and commentary shows in HD.

Dish Network last week uplinked NBA TV HD to channels 9508
and 9509. Dish Network subs are anticipating that NBA TV HD
will be available for the beginning of the NBA season which kicks
off tomorrow night at 8:00 PM ET, with an HD doubleheader on TNT.
The Trailblazers/Spurs are on at 8:00 PM ET followed by the
Rockets/Lakers at 10:30 PM ET. The Spurs are the defending
NBA champions having swept the Cavaliers 4-0 in the 2006-07
finals. The Lakers and Kobe Bryant will go against the Rockets
and Yao Ming.

Cable companies generally provide NBA TV in SD in sports tier.
Verizon's fledgling Fios TV system has not added NBA TV
for the 2007-08 season. During the 2006-07 season, the HD
NBA TV Games were provided to cable subs on the MOJO channel
or its predecessor INHD. The MOJO web site currently does not
have any information about NBA TV HD games. HD cable subs
are hoping that MOJO will provide the HD games again.

Red Sox One Victory Away

Cindarella is not going to make it to the ball. You never
know what is going to happen in baseball, but even
the most optomistic Rockies fan is thinking that just
getting to the World Series was special. The Rockies
are going to join the Padres and Brewers as World
Series participants without a ring. 22 times in World
Series history has a team been down 3 games to 0.
Only three times the Series was extended to a fifth
game. No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit
in the World Series. But as we all know, the Red Sox
came back from a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS in 2004.

Are the Red Sox a dynasty? Sure looks that way with
the two rookies, Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury
getting seven knocks last night. First time in World Series
history that two rookies each had three or more hits
for the same team in the same game. Ortiz is 31,
Ramirez 35, Varitek 35, Youkilis 28, Beckett 27,
Matsuzaka 27 and Papelbon 26. There are many
unknowns in baseball. The success of the pitching staff
and avoiding injuries are key ingredients in getting to the
World Series again. Whether Schilling 40 and Lowell 33,
come back or not, the Red Sox have the nucleus to make
another run next year. I am predicting both will be back.
Watch the game on FOX HD tonight.

HD Hockey- OT Sabres 4 Lightning 3 - SO Canadians 4 Penguins 3

HD Hockey cannot get any better than last night. Sidney
Crosby and company rallied the Penguins back from a 3-0
deficit with a 6 on 3 goal by Ryan Whitney with 1:52 remaining
in the 3rd period. After a scoreless OT period, defenseman
Andrei Markov took the sixteenth shot in a scoreless shootout
and won the game for the Canadians.

The Sabres/Lightning game was just as exciting. Tied 2-2
after two periods. The Lightning took a 3-2 lead on
center Vince Lecavalier's goal with 13:46 remaining in the
game. Sabres defenseman Nathan Paetsch tied the game
with 6:47 remaining. With 40.5 seconds left in OT, Sabres
left winger Thomas Vanek scored the winning goal.

Both of these game were available in HD on Dish Network
NHL Center Ice last night. I recorded each game on my
dual tuner Dish Network 722 HD DVR while watching the World
Series, occasionally checking the score at station breaks.
I was then able to watch the third period, OT and shootout
of each game while fast forwarding in about 40 minutes.
With an HD DVR, you can multitask and catch all the action.

HD Sports, Sunday, October 28, 2007

NFL
Fall Sundays are HD NFL day. Regional games are on CBS and FOX,
at 1:00PM ET and 4:00PM ET. There is no Sunday night game on
NBC tonight. The NFL is not competing with the World Series.
All HD NFL games are available on cable, Directv, Dish Network,
OTA (free), and Directv NFL Sunday Ticket. Check your local
listings for which regional games are available in your area.

College Football
There is one HD college football game on at 8:00PM on
ESPN HD. UCF at Southern Miss. Available on cable,
Directv and Dish Network.

NHL
There is one HD NHL game on today at 3:00 PM ET.
The Wild at the Avalanche. Both the away feed FSN-North
and the home feed Altitude is in HD. Available on cable,
Dish Network, Dish Network Center Ice and InDemand
Center Ice. Dish Network Center Ice is carrying both
the home and away HD feed.

The Directv NHL Center Ice schedule does list the remaining
two NHL games, Oilers at Ducks, 8:00PM ET and Red Wings
at Canucks, 10:30PM ET in HD on Directv Center Ice. But the
NHL web site does not. If these games are available in HD on
Directv, they should also be available on local cable in HD.

MLB World Series
Red Sox at Rockies, 8:00PM ET, on FOX, available on cable,
Directv, Dish Network and OTA (free).

Sabres/Lightning Game on Now in HD

The Sabres/Lightning Game is on right now in HD on Sun Sports.
Can be viewed on cable, Dish Network and Dish Network CI. The
NHL web site was incorrect and did not list the game as HD.
I am watching it on Dish Network CI. Tuned into the Flyers/Bruins
game earlier on Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia. CSN broadcasts all
home Flyers game in HD. As this was an away Flyers game, it was
broadcast in widescreen which CSN just started this fall.
Widescreen eliminates the black or grey pillars on each end of the
picture, and more or less gets rid of stretchovision. However, it is not
HD and I lost interest in the broadcast right away. Still a lot of HD
sports on tonight. World Series, Canadians/Penguins, Ohio
State/Penn State, South Carolina/Tennessee, and Bull Riding on Versus.
I am going to DVR the two hockey games and Ohio State/Penn State, and
watch the World Series. Enjoy

What is OTA?

OTA stands for off the air. It refers to receiving a television
signal with an antenna. Most people do not realize that a
crystal clear high definition signal can be received for free
with an antenna. Of course, you have to own an HDTV with
a digital tuner. But you can only receive the signals of the seven
major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, MY
and PBS. You cannot get ESPN, ESPN2, HBO, TNT, TBS or
your regional sports network with an antenna. A cable
or satellite subscription is needed to get the so called pay
channels. Generally, the OTA HD picture is a little sharper
than the cable or satellite picture because, your TV set
is receiving the signal directly, and the cable or satellite
company compresses the signal before delivering it to
your HDTV. If you lock onto the digital HD signal, there is
no ghosting or snow. Just a crystal clear picture with
crystal clear 5.1 audio.

But why do I want an OTA antenna, when I get the
local broadcast channels in HD from my cable or satellite
provider? Well it provides another HDTV source in case
your satellite signal is lost, or you want to watch the
HD baseball game on your regional sports network, but also
want to record a show in HD on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, MY or
PBS at the same time. Sunday night has a very crowded HD
schedule with baseball on ESPN, football on NBC, HBO series,
Desperate Housewives on ABC, Nature on PBS, and for the
first time ever this past sunday evening, Masterpiece Theatre
debuted in HD. There may be four shows on in HD that you or
another family member wants to watch in HD.

Well Sony makes two DVD recorders with a coaxial input for
HD OTA broadcasts and Sony's web site claims the units
record in HD to a DVD. The units are RDR-GXD455, DVD
Recorder with HD Tuner and RDR-VXD655, DVD Recorder
& VHS Combo Player with HD Tuner. The suggested retail
price is $279.99 and $379.99. I have two Sony DHG HDD500
units which is a HD DVR with both an OTA and a cable TV
coaxial input. These units have a hard drive that holds
60 hours of HD programming. I have both my OTA antenna
signal and cable signal running into the units to complement
my satellite and cable HD DVRs on an evening when I am
recording 3 to 5 different programs at the same time.
The majority of my broadcast channel recording is OTA,
while I leave the satellite or cable DVRs available to record
HD games on NHL Center Ice, NBA League Pass or regional
sports channels. The DHG HDD500 units are generally available
on Ebay. There is also a DHG HDD250 unit which records 30 hours
of HD programming.

Go to www.antennaweb.org, put your zip code in and it will
tell you how far you are from the broadcast signal, what
channels you can get and what type of antenna you need.
If you are 25 miles or less from the signal, an indoor antenna
or an old rabbit ears will probably work well. And remember,
on February 17, 2009, the analog TV signals are going to
be turned off. Only digital signals will be available. Many
HD signals now are UHF, but with the changeover, you will
need an UHF/VHF antenna. After the changeover, the digital
signal will be so strong that you will be able to carry around
a portable digital HDTV and pick up a crystal clear HD picture.
Remember all those baseball fans with portable TVs in the
stand watching football games in September. Well there will
probably be cell phones that are HDTVs in 2009.

Rockies in a Must Win Situation Tonight

Eleven Teams have come back from a 2-0 World Series deficit to win the Series, but no team has lost the first two on the road and come back to win. It does not look good for the Rockies,
and the Red Sox are the clear favorites to win the Series. The Red Sox have an overwhelming
advantage in starting pitching, and a lights out closer and set-up man. American League teams
are built around DH's like David Ortiz, Jim Thome, Frank Thomas, etc. The National League
teams do not have a bench player of the caliber of David Ortiz to fill the role of DH.

But remember the 1996 World Series. Joe Torre's first year as the Yankee Skipper. The Braves
had an overwhelming starting rotation that included future hall of famers, Greg Maddux, Tom
Glavine and John Smoltz. The Braves blew out the Yankees in game one, 12 to 1 at Yankee Stadium. Nineteen year old rookie Andruw Jones became the youngest player to homer in a World Series game and jacked two. Maddux pitched eight shutout innings in game two as the Braves won 4 to 0. The Braves looked unstoppable heading back to Atlanta with a 2-0 series
lead. But the Yankees won the next four and Joe Torre had a world series title in his first year
as Yankee Manager.

Rockie fans do not give up hope. There is no DH the next three games. The Rockies defense including Tulo at shortstop will make the difference tonight. There are a lot of NL fans rooting for the cindarella team to get its first title. Red Sox nation celebrated just three years ago.
I am predicting a Rockies win tonight.

Believe it or not, the 2004 World Series on FOX, won by the Red Sox, four games to zero over the Cardinals was the first World Series in HD. Can you imagine watching the World Series in standard definition now? I cannot. The 2004 World Series had an overall rating of 15.8.
Game 1 of the 2007 World Series had an overall rating of 10.5. The 2005 and 2006 World
Series had overall ratings of 11.1 and 10.1. The 2003 standard definition World Series had a 13.9 overall rating. Did HD bump up the 2004 ratings or was it just the teams that were involved
affect the ratings? I think it was the teams. But if the World Series were not HD in 2007,
my guess is that the ratings would drop considerably. Sports fans are now used to watching in
HD.

NBA on ESPN is in HD Tonight

Contrary to the ESPN web site, tonight's Cavaliers/Celtics game
is in HD on ESPN. This game started at 7:30 and can be viewed on
Cable, Directv and Dish Network in HD. It is also on CSNNE and probably
in HD, if ESPN is broadcasting in HD. Boston's trio of superstars are in the
lineup tonight, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen as well as
Cleveland's LeBron James. They sat out Boston's previous two
pre season games. The jury is out whether Boston's trio will
do as well as 71-72 Lakers, 69-13 record with Chamberlain, Baylor and West.
I would not place any of Boston's three in the NBA's greatest 50 players.
Chamberlain, Baylor and West rank in the NBA's top 10 or 15 of all time.
However, Boston is clearly the pre season favorite to win the Atlantic
Conference. The game looks spectacular in HD.

The 10:00 PM ET Kings/Lakers game on ESPN tonight from Vegas may
be in HD as well even though ESPN lists it as SD. If in HD on ESPN, it will
probably be in HD on KCAL.

Get your DVR working. Record either HD hockey, basketball, or
football. Watch one game live and fast forward through the games you record.
